Sri lanka is still a developing country. Sri lanka is working on their technology. Government Sri lanka has a democratic government, with an executive president (Mahinda Rajapaksa) and a parliament which is elected by the people/citizens of the country. Sri lankan elections must be voted by people 18 years and over. Religion There are many religions in sri lanka, the main religion being Buddhism. Buddhism-69% Hinduism-15% Christianity-08% Islam-07% Language The officil languages in srilanka are sinhala and tamil, however english is widely spokenand used as a medium of communication in commercial circles. Main language is sinhalease. Music The music of sri lanka originates in cultural traditions from three influences including the religions practices of buddhism, the aftereffects of portuguese colonizationon, and the commercial and historical influence of Indian culture mainly bollywood cinema. There are sets of folk songs known as 'Kavi' which is unique to members of different castes. Kavi's also relate to different rituals as they are sung/performed during them. Exports/Imports Sri lanka exports mainly tea, rubber, gems and jewellery are estimated at $8.1 billion and imports being mainly oil, textiles, food and machinery which were estimated at $14 billion in 2008, Sri laka's most important single country market is USA,as these two countries have a good bondage through imports/exports. Festival/ceremonies Sri lanka is a country rich in culture and history and the people of Sri lanka loves to find reasons to celebrate. Jan-The colourful thai pangal festival celebrated by hindus in jan 14th Feb- Independence day 4th feb, Maha sivarathri held end of feb or begining of march, Gangaramaya Navam fevahera which is to all visitors to the capital enjoying+expexperiencing the colourfully dressed elephants, musicians and dancers perading in the colombo streets. April-Sinhala and Tamil new year, easter (catholics) May- Wesak (buddhism) July- The esala peraherd in kandy August- Madhu festival and the feast of st anne Nov- Deepavali (hindu) Dec- Christmas (catholics) Tourism Tourism is one of the main industries in sri lanka. Tourist attractions are mainly around islands famous beaches located in the southern+eastern parts of the country. Sri lanka's beaches are often visited by tourists as well as the city of Colombo for business, national parks and world heritage sites. Sri lanka is mainly admired for its beauty and culture as well as tradition. Famous landmarks Sri lanka is known as the 'tea country' because there are hills filled with tea plants. The most famous is sigiriya which should have been classed as one of the wonders of the ancient world long ago, however there is now a proposal to name it as the eigth wonder of the world. The sigiriya rock/ the lion mountain highlights is sri lanka's memorable past and visited mainly by tourists and admired as wellas protected. Flora/Fauna Sri lanka has many different types of plants. The temperature in sri lanka is good so many unusual and different plants grow there. Mammals, birds and reptiles have been reduced by the conversionof forests into rice fields, however buffalo, deer, bear, elephants, monkeys and leopards are still present today. Sri lanka is known for the fauna and flora. Resources In sri lanka the resource potential in minerals e.g gemstones, graphite, ilmenite, iron, ore, limestone, quartz, mica, industrial clay and salt is large. Fossil fuels are the only known resource that is the low grade peat found in a swampy strentch along th west coast. People Sri lanka has a population of 19 million. The people of Sri lankans are poor, and they get really little things but they are still happy no matter what. Many Sri lankan children are decent and very good in their education. Some poor children can't go to school and the reason for this is because their parents can't afford it, so they have to stay back home and help their parents in housework.
